Make Time for Rest with These 3 Tips

Intro

Rest is important. I don’t think anyone would argue that point. So why do so many of us push ourselves to our breaking points while allowing minimal time for rest? In today’s fast-paced society, we are so focused on success and productivity that we forgo our rest and our health. But what are we sacrificing?

Many studies show that rest promotes better performance and reduces stress. If we stop and think about it, wouldn’t more rest be better for all of us all around? If we get more rest, we can get more, better work done! 

But that’s not really the point, is it? We all deserve to rest. Yes, even you! It is a necessary part of life. It’s what keeps us going! We all deserve to rest and it’s not something we have to earn. 

But how do we make time for rest in our non-stop, hustle culture?

Schedule It

We all have busy lives, but what makes our lives busy can differ from person to person. Maybe it’s work, children, family, or a combination of everything. No matter who else or what else you have to take care of in your life, you also need to take care of yourself. I’m sure you’ve heard it a million times before:

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

It’s crucial to make time for rest in your life. And no, I’m not talking about your sleep schedule. That’s a whole other post in and of itself!

Scheduling a separate time for rest in your life can truly make a difference. Here’s what I’ve found works best for me:

Set an appointment

  • Add it to your calendar! Make it a non-negotiable appointment, like a doctor or dentist appointment.
  • Choose a time you won’t be disturbed. Try a time when you’re home alone, the kids or in bed, etc. Any time you can escape and be by yourself!
  • Schedule at least ONCE A WEEK. I aim for once a day! 

Figure Out What Works for You

Time for my signature phrase: everyone is different, so what works is going to be different for everyone! Take some time to think about what makes you feel the calmest and most rested. Here are some things I love: 

  • Writing
  • Drawing
  • Cozy games
  • Meditation
  • Napping
  • Taking a long, hot shower or bath
  • Curling up with a hot cup of tea and a book

Now, some people may write or draw or play games for a living. It can be discouraging to try to use those same tasks for your rest. But don’t worry. You can still enjoy the things you love. Just make sure you do NOT let this become a time for work!

Take as Much (or as Little) as You Need

How much time do you need for rest? That’s going to depend on you and your individual needs. Not to mention what else you have going on. Whether you take 15 minutes or over an hour, all that matters is your setting aside time for rest.

What can you do with what time you have? Here are some suggestions:

15 minutes

  • Write
  • Sketch
  • Meditate

30 minutes

  • Nap
  • Read

60+ minutes

  • Cozy games
  • bath

Conclusion

I know it’s not easy, but do your best to make rest a meaningful part of your schedule! It’s better to rest before you need it than to wait for yourself to get burnt out.
