9 easy steps to my morning routine

It might sound a little cheesy, but my morning routine absolutely sets the tone for my day. I love to get up and ease into my day, accomplishing some little things before I actually dive into the real world. Have a routine that works for you is SO beneficial because it can boost your productivity, your energy, and your health!

Please make sure you read my disclaimers if you haven’t already.

Recently I’ve discovered that I need to change up my morning routine every so often. Otherwise, I get into a sort of rut and feel stagnant! Not how I want every day to feel.

What better time to change a routine than with the change of the season, right?? So I’m going to lay out my Autumn Morning Routine for you guys.

Just a heads up, there are some links in the blog post. They are NOT partnered or sponsored links and I will receive nothing if you click through or make a purchase. They’re just some resources I thought were helpful!

I segment my morning routine into 3 basic categories:

  1. Mind
    1. These are tasks that force me to look inward
  2. Body
    1. Pretty self explanatory – these tasks are exercise oriented
  3. Soul
    1. In my opinion, the most important of all. These tasks are small things that bring me joy

As I’m going through each step in my Autumn Morning Routine, I’ll identify which category it falls into! Let’s get started!

1 – Wake up at 6:00

Yep, that’s right. I wake up at 6am every day! I even try to wake up this early on my days off (but that doesn’t always happen!) I use this alarm clock, which mimics sunlight to wake me up naturally before the alarm actually sounds! It wakes me up gently and I feel a lot better than when I get woken up my loud noises.

2 – Walk Rory {BODY}

Immediately after waking up, I walk my dog, Rory. He’s a tiny lil nugget with an even smaller bladder, so I want to make sure he can relieve himself outside before he does so in my apartment! We usually take a 15 or 20 minute walk around our complex. This is my first bit of exercise for the day. Even though it’s a light walk, it really starts to get my blood flowing, which wakes me up. It’s also nice to start my day with some fresh air!

3 – Wash my face and brush my teeth

After I bring Rory in and fill up his water and food bowls, it’s time to take care of myself! I hate the way my face and teeth feel in the morning, so I immediately head to the sink to wash my face. I don’t do anything fancy, just a quick wash with some Neutrogena cleanser and then I pat on some Thayer’s rose petal toner. While my toner dries, I brush my teeth. It might sound weird that I brush my teeth before I eat, but I don’t think I could live another second without it. I love my Quip toothbrush, not only because it’s gold and white (exactly my aesthetic) but it buzzes the time so I make sure I’m brushing properly.

4 – Make the Bed

If my boyfriend is away or already awake (lol, that’s funny. He’d never be up this early!) I’ll go ahead and make the bed. There’s something about making the bed that just makes me so put-together! Plus, the nicer my bed looks, the less I want to crawl back in right away!

5 – Morning Pages {MIND}

Now I’m really getting into my morning! I make my way to the living room to start on my Morning Pages. I used to write everything with pen and paper, but it got to the point where it was hurting my hand to much. I had to look for alternatives. That’s when I found this app! I downloaded this on my iPad and it has made my Morning Pages practice even more enjoyable. I’m able to let my thoughts flow without having to take a break because of my cramping hand. I also really enjoy the analytics it gives. It can tell you how negative, neutral, or positive each entry is. It’s a fun insight to look into every week or month.

6 – Meditation {MIND}

Okay, so the way I meditate might sound absolutely insane to all of you. But I’ve tried so many apps and tricks and nothing has worked for me. Other than this, that is. Right after I finish my journaling, I prep my coffee pot. I usually make enough for me to have 2 cups (1 with my breakfast and 1 for my commute.) I start the coffee pot and that becomes my meditation timer. I sit cross-legged on the sofa or the floor and meditate until the coffee timer beeps. I have never felt more at ease than in those 5 or so minutes and I am absolutely more mindful because of it. The sound of the coffee brewing even works as a sort of white noise for me! If you’re struggling with your meditation practice, I suggest you give it a try!!

7 – Breakfast

Coffee’s ready! And that means it’s time for breakfast. Y’all. If I don’t eat a good breakfast, I am going to be absolutely USELESS for the day. I need this to fuel my body, so it is hella important to me. Of course I enjoy my cup of coffee (black), but my meal varies from day to day. I love a good Greek yogurt parfait, but some days I’ll enjoy a fruit scone or some avocado toast. Maybe even some eggs? It all depends how I feel that day!

8 – Hobbies {SOUL}

While I finish up my coffee and let my food settle, I like to work on my hobbies just a little bit. Again, this differs from day to day just depending how I’m feeling. But no matter what, I always set aside this time to do something I love! Lately, I’ve been using this time to draw for Inktober. Other times I might watch my favorite YouTube channels, read a book, or snuggle Rory! I might even use this time to scroll through social media to see what wonderful things my friends and followers are up to. Again, this is just something to bring me joy and fill me with warmth.

9 – Light Exercise {BODY}

At this point, I still have about 20-30 minutes before I need to start getting ready for work. Now, you’re never going to find me going for a 5K or squat-pressing weights this early in the morning. But, I still like to do a little something to get my blood pumping before I start my commute to work. I almost always do an easy breezy yoga routine during this time. The type of practice that stretches out my muscles and makes me feel good, but it doesn’t make me uncomfortable. It’s also nice to open up my body before I’m stuck in my care for 30-50 minutes on my drive to work!

That’s it! The 9 steps to my Autumn Morning Routine! This is the routine I’ve found that works for me right now. Like I said, come Winter time, this is absolutely going to change. SO be on the lookout for that post when the time comes!!
